Description

Drip Saline Fluid Monitoring System using IoT and Node MCU

OBJECTIVE

To observe parameters of IV drip such as drip rate, drip level, and pH level and alert in an emergency situation

ABSTRACT

In recent years due to technological advancements, many sophisticated techniques have been evolved for assuring fast recovery of patients in hospitals. For good patient care in hospitals, assessment, and management of patients? fluid and electrolyte needs is the most fundamental thing required. Most all hospitals and assistants/nurses are responsible for monitoring the IV fluid level continuously. But unfortunately, most of the time, the observer may forget to change the saline bottle at the correct time due to their busy schedule. This may lead to several problems for the patients such as backflow of blood, blood loss, etc. To overcome this critical situation, a low-cost WSN based automatic alerting and indicating device is proposed where an IR sensor is used as a level sensor. It is based on the principle that the IR sensor output voltage level changes when the intravenous fluid level is below a certain limit. A comparator is used to continuously compare the IR output with a predefined threshold. When the transceiver output is negative then the Arduino controller identifies the fluid level is too low and it alerts the observer by buzzer and LCD at the control room indicates the room number of the patient for quick recovery. With this, a setup for measuring the rate of fluid flow can be added this setup consists of an LDR and LED.????

INTRODUCTION:

These days? technology is growing at a very high speed. Automation of everything is the need of the hour. Human lives have become much more dependent on electronic devices. Today’s world requires sophisticated control in its different electronic gadgets. The basic aim of a saline level indicator is to ease human lives. Automation of the surrounding environment of a modern human being helps to increase work efficiency and saves time. Saline is fed when the patient’s body is dehydrated. Constant monitoring of the saline level in the bottle is required. If the saline in the bottle is fully consumed, and the bottle is not replaced immediately then the pressure difference between the patient’s blood pressure and the empty saline bottle causes an outward rush of blood into the saline. This situation can pose a serious threat to the patient’s well-being. Thus the automation device is suggested in this paper in order to avoid any inconvenience that may be caused to the patients in case of lacking constant monitoring by patient’s relatives or hospital employees.

This chapter contains an introduction to basic saline bottle setup and the necessity to automatically control it. Normally the roller clamp arrangement is used to control the flow of the saline to the patient. In emergency situations, the slider clamp is used to stop the flow of the saline. But in both cases, a nurse is required to perform the necessary action. Unfortunately, If the nurse did not notice the emptying of the saline bottle. Then the blood from the patient’s body will start to flow back to the saline bottle. It will make the patient feel dizzy and it will also reduce the heartbeat which could also finally lead to death. In order to overcome this situation automatic saline infusion monitoring and controlling is required.

EXISTING SYSTEM

In the present system, a caretaker or nurse has required continuous monitoring of the saline bottle level to overcome the return of blood from the patient to the saline bottle. At present, we are using a roller clamp mechanism for controlling the flow rate of the intravenous fluid into the patient’s body. If the caretaker or the nurse didn’t notice the draining of the saline bottle, then it will lead to the reverse flow of blood from the patient to the bottle which is highly dangerous.

  • Manual monitoring
  • Expensive system

    DISADVANTAGES

    • Needs TDM system to monitor coma patients.
    • The current system is used for normal inpatients only.
    • Under abnormal conditions, patients depend on nurses or doctors.

    PROPOSED SYSTEM

To overcome this situation an effective idea is proposed to develop an effective health monitoring system that alerts the doctor or nurse when the fluid level of the saline bottle is beyond the threshold limit. It comprises of IR sensor, RF transmitter, Receiver, buzzer, etc. Basically, the IR transmitter transmits an IR ray which is received by the IR receiver and the measured output is in terms of voltage. Automatic drips level Indicating system. Initially, IR sensors (IR Transmitter ? IR Receiver) are placed at the bottom on either side of the saline bottle. The IR transmitter continuously transmits the rays through the saline liquid and the IR receiver starts to receive it and the corresponding output voltage is measured as 4.5V. When the process is going on, slowly the saline liquid enters the patient’s body through their vein. This is done with the help of an intravenous (IV) set. Hence the level of nutritious liquid in the saline bottle is getting decreased gradually. When the medication liquid in the drips bottle goes beyond the IR sensor covering the area, the IR receiver receives more rays than in the previous condition whose output voltage is measured as 5V.

    ADVANTAGES

    • The system checks the saline level and PH level
    • Easy to implement in real-time?
